Best Social Media Trends in 2020: Improve Your Social Media Marketing Strategy During a Crisis

#1 Strike a balance between private and public engagement

strike a balance between private and public engagement

Successful brands are striking a balance between driving awareness on public news feeds and the private messaging channels like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and private messaging on LinkedIn.

Public feeds are still a critical space for brand discovery, half of all brand awareness happens in public social feeds, however deeper customer connections are occurring via messaging apps.

The trend is for one-to-one engagement on private channels.

#2 Purpose-driven companies will take center stage

purpose-driven companies will take center stage

Reports show that employees expect the organizations they work for to be good global citizens and contribute to making the world a better place.

Brands that earn their employee’s trust will have a significant competitive advantage in 2020.

In fact, purpose-driven companies grow three times faster on average than their competitors. They also have a higher workforce and customer satisfaction.

Leverage this in your social media by analyzing the latest trends. If your business has a great internal culture and a strong commitment to positive change in the world, promote this in all your social channels and your website.

#3 Learn lessons from TikTok

In 2019, TikTok’s popularity continued to grow and if you have teenage kids at home you’ll know what I’m talking about.

I’m not suggesting you get your CEO or directors dancing on TikTok, but it has an important role in sourcing audience and competitor intelligence.

The Verge has reported TikTok has just experienced its first-ever decline in downloads on a quarterly basis, so its growth may be slowing and with Instagram launching Reels, which essentially replicates TikTok features, maybe that decline will continue.

The trend essentially is to stay current and be innovative.

TikTok brings valuable insight into the future of social culture, content, and collaboration. Find ways of bringing the fun and innovative energy of TikTok content, into your other social media platforms.

#4 Focus on performance marketing

We have all seen how organic reach has declined. The focus now is on the return on investment (ROI) and the performance of the campaign.

We want to know conversions, that is how many sales, leads, clicks, or the engagement of each ad.

This is where performance marketing comes in.

It’s not just about building brand awareness anymore, social marketers need to do much more and balance short-term conversions with long-term strategies that build brands over time.

These are the 5 Most Important Social Media Trends to Watch for in 2020.

While the list is not exhaustive, it gives you a snapshot of what you need to know for the year again.
