Tip #1: Use Compelling Metadata in Your Posts and Pages

 

Metadata is data that describes other data. Meta is a prefix that means “an underlying description or definition”.

Meta tags provide data about a particular webpage in the document’s HTML. While meta tags don’t appear on the page itself, they can be read by web crawlers and search engines. 

Meta tags are basically short content descriptors that help search engines to understand what a web page is about.

The use of metadata on your posts and web pages is quite crucial. This is because metadata contains keywords that are linked to the content.

Meta tags are often evaluated to display snippets by search engines to determine a web page’s relevance for ranking purposes. 

Examples of metadata include the title and description elements. Your audience will use the title and meta description to select which site to visit.

Meta descriptions can be any length. But because Google generally shortens snippets to 155–160 characters, I recommend keeping the descriptions between 50–160 characters.

Tip #2: Regularly Post on Social Media (Pro Tip: Include Native Content)

 

One of the ways of increasing traffic to your website for free is regularly posting and sharing your blog content on social media. Social media increases your reach and visibility. 

You need to become active and start engaging with the key social media platforms where your audience hangs out most.

Social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, or Tik Tok can be excellent vehicles to promote engagement and get noticed by new audiences. 

Pro Tip:

Make sure you post native content along with your blog link. Don’t just share the post title and link.

This is because nowadays social media algorithms tend to hide posts that send their users off the platform.

Original content allows for a high-level engagement which translates to website traffic increase.

Social media algorithms reward users that post often rather than once in a while.

That’s why it’s critical to have a content calendar that enables you to post regularly to every platform.

Tip #3: Include Keyword(s) in Your URL

 

Seven out of ten top-ranking websites for each industry used a keyword in their URLs, two of which used a partial keyword.

URLs that are keyword-rich aren’t just for on-page SEO purposes. Don’t get me wrong, they definitely are important for SEO.

What you need to know is that including a keyword in your URL can soar your organic CTR (Click-Through-Rate) by a whopping 45%!

Yep!

The URL doesn’t have to be a perfect match with the keyword, just ensure that it’s similar and you’ll be sure to have traffic rolling in.

Tip #4: Regularly Update Your Website Content 

 

I’m assuming that you’ve taken the advice of “posting fresh web content to increase traffic” very seriously. Which is good.

But what if I told you that there’s a much simpler way to increase traffic to your site by making use of your old content?

Older content that exists on your site may not give you the results that you need. 

Fortunately, you can update this content to boost growth. This allows you to lengthen the lifespan of some of your previous best posts.

In addition, it’s a brilliant way to optimize your site for search engines (SEO) as ‘new’ and relevant content is loved by algorithms.

So dig into your archives and draw out blog posts that can gain from a revamp.

You’ll need to update links, statistics, and references. It would also be smart of you to create ‘evergreen’ content such that irrespective of the timespan, your posts will still remain relevant.

 

Tip #5: Write Longer Headlines for Blog Posts

 

The length of your headline is just as critical as the content of your headline.

Do you want to get more traffic to your website? Write longer headlines.

The length of your headline can influence your readers to determine whether they feel engaged enough to click through to your website content.

A BuzzSumo study found that longer headlines usually correlate with increased levels of social sharing. They generate 76% more shares when compared to shorter headlines.

 

Tip #6: Longer Blog Posts, Articles, and Videos 

 

Again the trend generally is for longer content. I know that sounds exhausting and it’s kind of ironic. 

We live in a time where people have short attention spans and are time-poor.

However, when people click on an article or video they want to be informed and they don’t want just surface information. 

The people that read longer content are also more likely to convert into good leads for your business.

As a former television journalist, I was trained to get to the point. The fewer words the better. 

However, audiences expect more now.

While I don’t recommend that you talk endlessly for no reason or pad out your writing to increase your word limit. The data tells us that you do need to write long blog posts.

Aim for 1,500 words, with 2,300 words being an ideal length according to HubSpot

The goal is to offer more in-depth information—no fluff, no padding. You can still write shorter posts, just be sure to include lengthy posts as part of your content marketing strategy.

 

 

Tip #7: Create a YouTube Channel

 

I can’t emphasize this enough.

Because I’ve created a YouTube channel too.

It would be a major understatement to refer to video content as huge.

According to Orbelo, YouTube is the most popular video-sharing platform for marketers.  

It’s projected that in 2022, 82 percent of the global internet traffic will come from video streaming and downloads.

Consequently, starting a YouTube channel is something you should consider if you don’t have one yet. You will accomplish two main things:

  1.  You’ll be providing content to your audience in a format that they’re heavily invested in.
  2.  You’ll grow an audience to send back to your website.

 

Tip #8: Develop Content on Trending Topics

 

Truth be told, most topics are very competitive.

Whichever topic you may think of writing, it has most likely been written by hundreds if not thousands of people.

So what’s the solution? You ask.

Create content about trending topics.

Trending topics are the sought-after topics that aren’t quite competitive (yet).

However, it can be time-consuming to come up with a trending topic for content creation.

Scrolling through results, browsing media sites, trawling the SERPs for some inspiration and hot topics won’t cut it.

With no data to quantify your ideas, how can you ensure that the content marketing article you create will in effect drive traffic?

Easy-peasy.

Tip #9: Capitalize on Email Marketing

 

Another great tip to increase website traffic with content marketing is to capitalize on email marketing.

This entails compiling a list of email addresses from your customers or readers and sending out timely and periodic emails.

When you incorporate email marketing it will help you nurture a stronger relationship with your target audience, which in turn will allow for easy marketing of new products or services. 

You can also update your subscribers with trending news, as well as inform them when a new blog post is up.

All of these will ultimately have a significant impact on your website traffic.

It may require some work to start up a podcast, but is surprisingly doable from a technical standpoint. 

If you’re already making videos, think about whether the content will translate well into a podcast.

You can use software, such as Kapwing or Audio Converter, to convert your video into an MP3. 

 

Tip #11: Publish Comparison (X vs. Y) Posts

 

Examples of “X vs. Y” posts are:

  • Posts vs. Pages in WordPress
  • Categories vs. Tags
  • Fragrance Oils vs. Essential Oils
  • “Convertkit vs. MailChimp”
  • MMS vs SMS

Here’s why  “X vs. Y” posts are a great content marketing deal to increase website traffic.

First, X vs. Y keywords don’t have lots of contention when it comes to SEO.

For instance, a post was published and optimized around the keyword “Ahrefs vs. SEMRush”.

Believe it or not, that page moved to the top of Google SERPs within a few weeks.

Second, people that look for “X vs. Y” keywords are normally way advanced. Here’s what I mean;

Someone searching for “SEMRush vs. Ahrefs” is already informed about SEO. They just want to find out which is the best tool.

So, leverage on these types of posts if you want your website traffic to skyrocket.

 

Tip #12: Utilize Guest Posting

 

From a content marketing perspective, using your own website to run a blog is brilliant.

However, when your focus is on how to increase traffic to your website for free, guest posting can provide a better opportunity. 

Guest posting is the writing and publishing of content on someone else’s blog or website.

This allows you to make connections with people who have authority in your industry or niche which in turn gives you access to new audiences.

For you to get started with guest posting on the right foot, you’ll need to reach out to blogs that attract your target audience.

You can use Google to find niche-relevant guest posting opportunities. 

The most effective Google search strings are: 

  • “keyword+ “write for us”
  • “keyword” + “guest post”
  • “keyword” + “This post was written by”
  • intitle:guest blog guidelines
  • intitle:guest post guidelines
